Description
Kékes (1,014 m) is the highest mountain in Hungary, in the Mátra range of Heves county, about 12 km northeast of the town of Gyöngyös. Its summit, known as Kékestető, is one of Hungary's most popular tourist attractions — often cited as third after Lake Balaton and the Danube. On top stands the Kékestető TV Tower (opened 1981) with an observation deck; on clear days the view reaches the Tatra Mountains to the north. Kékestető is also a small resort with ski pistes — including Hungary's longest and highest — making it popular for skiing and sledding in winter, and the site has been an officially recognised climatic health resort since 1963. As the country's high point, Kékes is a favourite peak-bagging objective, and its summit lies on the Országos Kéktúra (National Blue Trail), over 1,100 km long, as well as the E4 European long-distance path. The classic hike starts from Mátrafüred or Mátraháza; because a paved road also climbs to the summit, Kékes is friendly to families and experienced hikers alike.

Routes
Jalur Klasik — Mátrafüred → Kékestető
Sedang–agak berat (közepes–nehéz): jalur hutan bertanda jelas dengan beberapa tanjakan berkelok; cocok mulai usia 10 tahunThe most classic hike to Hungary's high point starts at Mátrafüred (free trailhead parking) and ends at the Kékestető summit (1,014 m). The trail follows forest paths and glades, then climbs more steeply through switchbacks before reaching the summit area. It is clearly marked and walkable year-round, though it can be muddy and slippery after rain. At the top are the Tető restaurant/café and the Kékestető TV Tower with its observation deck — on clear days the view even reaches the Tatra Mountains. Because of its combined distance and gain the route is graded medium to hard, yet remains friendly to reasonably fit family hikers.

Climbing Experiences
Kékes, Hungary's high point (1,014 m), is a hiking destination friendly to almost every level. The classic hike starts from Mátrafüred, following forest tracks and glades up to the Kékestető summit — about 13.4 km with ~752 m of gain, graded medium to hard, roughly 5.5 hours. A gentler route links Kékestető with Mátraháza (~5.7 km, easy–medium). The summit is no wild alpine peak: it holds the Kékestető TV Tower with an observation deck, a café and active ski slopes in winter, making it great for families — especially as a paved road also climbs to the top. Kékestető lies on the 1,100+ km Országos Kéktúra (National Blue Trail) and the E4 European long-distance path, with several family-friendly short loops nearby. The clips and guides below — in Hungarian and English — show trail conditions from Mátrafüred, the observation tower, and views over the Mátra range across the seasons.
