Information

Elevation
915 m
Country
Mauritania (MR)
Location / Range
Tiris Zemmour, Sahara Mauritania — antara Zouérat (timur) dan Fdérick (barat)
Mountain type
Inselberg bijih besi (magnetit/hematit), non-vulkanik
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
22.6511, -12.5742
Difficulty
Sedang — tanpa pendakian teknis, tetapi berupa scrambling di dasar kanyon berbatu lepas, tanpa air, tanpa naungan, dan dalam panas gurun
Best Season
Musim dingin hingga awal semi (sekitar November–Maret). Pendaki yang mendokumentasikan pendakian 2022 sengaja memilih Maret, sebelum suhu musim panas menjadi terlalu ekstrem.
Permits & Rules

Description

Kediet ej Jill (915 m) is the highest point in Mauritania — an inselberg rising out of the flat Sahara in the Tiris Zemmour region, with the mining town of Zouérat to its east and Fdérick to its west. The mountain is composed largely of iron ore. Its blue-grey colour comes from a high concentration of magnetite, and the iron content is strong enough to disturb the local magnetic field and deflect compass needles — in the 1960s, geologists used exactly this magnetic signature to locate further deposits in the area. Geologically, the USGS classifies it as a Superior-type iron deposit with high-grade hematite ore (around 60–65% Fe). That iron has also shaped the mountain's fate. Colonial-era plans to mine it in the 1930s were interrupted by the Second World War; commercial extraction began in 1952, was nationalised in 1974, and is now run by SNIM. The ore travels roughly 700 km to the port of Nouadhibou on Mauritania's famous iron ore train, whose rakes can run 2–3 km long. For climbers the consequence is concrete: the mountain belongs to the mining company, so permission is the crux, and ascents are very rare. Sources also disagree on the numbers: the elevation is given as 915 m (EN/DE Wikipedia), 917 m (FR Wikipedia), while local Arabic media cite about 950 m — and the summit is frequently mis-mapped online.

Routes

The route taken by the Gilbertson brothers in March 2022, and the only one documented in detail. The trailhead lies about 13 km west of Zouérat, in a valley northeast of the summit — a faint old mining road still visible on satellite imagery, in an area no longer actively mined (active truck operations are on the valley's east side). The old road climbs the valley, then washes out entirely into a boulder-strewn creek bed, passing through a canyon with steep cliff walls for several kilometres, and exits via a low-angle col at the canyon head — a faint goat-herder trail helps here. Above the col the terrain eases considerably: small rocks and fast ridge walking. Follow the ridge west to the north–south summit ridge; the TRUE SUMMIT is the SOUTHERN one, marked by a cairn, about 1 km south and measured 17 m higher than the northern summit. A warning peculiar to this mountain: the magnetite content can deflect a compass needle, so navigation must rely on GPS, not a compass.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Zouérat → titik awal (±13 km ke barat)

Lembah di timur laut puncak; bekas jalan tambang lama, area tak lagi ditambang aktif. Butuh 4WD dan sopir lokal.

  2. 2

Jalan tambang tua → dasar kanyon berbatu

Jalan rusak menjadi talus/dasar sungai kering; kanyon berdinding tebing curam sepanjang beberapa kilometer.

  3. 3

Kanyon → pelana (col) di ujung kanyon

Keluar lewat pelana berkemiringan landai; ada jalan setapak samar bekas penggembala kambing.

  4. 4

Pelana → punggungan → puncak selatan (puncak sejati)

    915 mdpl

Medan ringan, batuan kecil. Puncak selatan bertugu batu — 17 m lebih tinggi dari puncak utara. Puncaknya sangat berangin; tim 2022 membangun tembok batu setinggi lutut untuk bivak.

Climbing Experiences

Kediet ej Jill is climbed very rarely, and the main obstacle is not the terrain but PERMISSION: the mountain sits within the concession of SNIM, the state iron-mining company. Documented foreign ascents can be counted on one hand — Ginge Fullen (2005), Greg Harris (2019), then Eric and Matthew Gilbertson (March 2022), whose access was facilitated by SNIM and even covered by a local Zouérat newspaper. The route itself is desert scrambling: following an old mining road that degrades into a boulder-strewn canyon bed, exiting via a col at the canyon head, then following the ridge to the cairned southern summit. Because the mountain's magnetite can deflect a compass needle, navigation must rely on GPS — a detail almost unique among mountains. The sources below combine summit video, detailed trip reports, Arabic television coverage, and footage of scientific fieldwork on its slopes.
