Description
Kawagarbo (卡瓦格博, 6,740 m) is the highest and most sacred peak of the Meili Snow Mountains (梅里雪山) complex in western Yunnan, China, near the Tibet border. It is one of the eight great sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhist tradition (八大神山), venerated as the residence of the protective deity Kawagarbo by the local Khampa people. Historically it has never been successfully summited — the joint Chinese-Japanese expedition in January 1991 ended in catastrophe when all 17 members perished in a massive avalanche, making it one of Asia's worst mountaineering disasters. Since April 2001, Yunnan provincial authorities have permanently banned all summit climbing out of respect for its sacred status and to prevent further loss of life. Today it is a nature and spiritual tourism destination — viewed from the Feilai Temple (飞来寺, ~3,300 m) directly opposite, the golden ice pyramid at dawn is one of China's most iconic sights. The kora circumambulation trek circling the massif spans ~240 km and is a revered 8–12 day pilgrimage for Tibetan devotees from across the region.

Routes
Meili Kora — Lingkaran Ziarah Penuh (Circumambulation)
Trekking menantang (ketinggian 3.200–4.449 m, celah bersalju)Lingkaran ziarah sepanjang ~240 km mengelilingi seluruh masif Meili Snow Mountain — dimulai dari Deqin, melewati desa-desa Tibet terpencil di Yunnan dan Tibet Timur, menyeberangi celah salju Doker La (4.449 m), dan melewati Yubeng sebagai titik paling ikonik. Rute ini dijalani ribuan peziarah Buddhis Tibet setiap tahun; bukan rute pendakian puncak, melainkan perjalanan spiritual dan fisik mengelilingi gunung tersuci di Yunnan.
Route Segments
- 1
Deqin → Cizhong
- 2
Cizhong → Yubeng (via Doker La)
- 3
Yubeng → Yubeng Waterfall (Sacred Waterfall)
- 4
Yubeng → Mingyong → Deqin
Bagian akhir kora melalui Glasier Mingyong (akhir-akhir ini menyusut signifikan), lalu kembali ke Deqin melalui sisi timur masif
Trekking Desa Yubeng — Lembah Tersembunyi
SourceTrekking Glasier Mingyong — Kaki Timur Kawagarbo
SourceClimbing Experiences
Kawagarbo (6,740 m) is one of the eight sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism — it is forbidden to climb and has never been successfully summited. The tragedy of 3 January 1991, when all 17 members of a Sino-Japanese expedition were swept away by a massive overnight avalanche, made Kawagarbo a symbol of a mountain that 'refuses' to be climbed. Today the richest experience here is the Meili Kora, a 10–12 day pilgrimage circuit of ~240 km encircling the entire massif through Tibetan villages, high valleys, and snowbound passes above 4,000 m — one of the most challenging and spiritually meaningful treks in Asia.
