Description

Katla (1,450 m) is an active subglacial volcano in southern Iceland, hidden beneath the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap near the town of Vík. It has been very active historically, with at least twenty documented major eruptions since 2920 BC and its last major eruption in 1918; its eruptions rate VEI 4–5 and often trigger very large glacial outburst floods (jökulhlaup). Katla is also one of Earth's largest volcanic sources of CO2. Because its summit lies under the ice, 'climbing' Katla in practice means activities on and inside the glacier: the year-round Katla ice cave tours on the Kötlujökull outlet, and glacier hikes on Mýrdalsjökull and its outlet Sólheimajökull — all safely done only with a guide.

Routes

Pendakian Gletser Sólheimajökull (Icelandic Mountain Guides)

Sedang — pendakian gletser dasar dengan crampon dan kapak es
Sekitar 3,5 jam (tur); ~2 jam di atas gletser

A guided walk on the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull on Iceland's south coast, exploring ice ridges, sinkholes and ice sculptures shaped by ice movement and nearby volcanic ash.

Pendakian Gletser Sólheimajökull (tur 3 jam)

Mudah/ramah pemula dengan crampon, kapak es, dan harness yang disediakan
Sekitar 3 jam (termasuk ~1,5–2 jam di atas es)

An easy guided hike onto Sólheimajökull, an outlet of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, traversing crevasses and ash-streaked ice formations and moulins. It is accessed via Road 221 off Route 1.

Meet in Vík, then ride a super-jeep across black-sand plains to the Kötlujökull outlet of Mýrdalsjökull, followed by a short walk over the ice to the natural blue ice cave streaked with volcanic ash. It runs year-round and only with a guide.

Climbing Experiences

Because Katla's summit lies beneath the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, the real 'Katla experience' is exploring its glacier and ice caves rather than summiting. The headline draw is the Katla Ice Cave — a natural ice cave that can be visited year-round on the Kötlujökull outlet, with blue ice walls streaked by black volcanic ash. Tours typically depart from Vík by super-jeep across black-sand plains, followed by a short walk on the ice with provided crampons and helmet. Glacier hikes on Sólheimajökull — an easily accessed outlet of Mýrdalsjökull off Route 1 — are also a popular, beginner-friendly way to experience the same icy terrain. All of these require a licensed guide because of crevasses and volcanic risk.
