Information

Elevation
1.839 m
Country
Papua New Guinea (PG)
Location / Range
Laut Bismarck, lepas pantai utara Provinsi Madang (sekitar 74 km dari daratan utama Papua Nugini)
Mountain type

Description

Karkar (1,839 m) is an active basaltic-andesitic stratovolcano that forms an entire oval island in the Bismarck Sea, about 74 km off the north coast of Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, separated from the mainland by the Isumrud Strait. The island is roughly 25 km long and 19 km wide, with a central volcano containing two nested calderas; the active Bagiai cone (also called Uluman) has grown inside the inner caldera. The 1974–1975 eruption produced lava that covered nearly 70% of the inner caldera floor, while the 1979 eruption produced no lava flow but killed two volcanologists, Robin Cooke and Elias Ravian; activity was recorded again as recently as February 2013. Despite being active, the island is densely populated (about 70,000 people speaking Waskia and Takia) with very fertile volcanic soil, a single ring road circling the island, and family-owned cacao and coconut plantations as its main exports. Its high point looks out toward the distant town of Madang.

Routes

Akses ke kaldera & kerucut Bagiai (via kapal + pendakian hutan)

Non-teknis namun terpencil — trek hutan menuju gunungapi aktif

Karkar is first reached by boat from Madang across the Isumrud Strait to the island. From coastal villages, one climbs up through plantations and tropical forest toward the central volcano, which holds two nested calderas; the active Bagiai (Uluman) cone has grown inside the inner caldera whose floor is partly covered by lava from the 1974–1975 eruption. Because it is active with a fatal 1979 eruption in its history, the approach is best done with local guidance and attention to volcanic conditions.

Jalan lingkar pulau (island ring road)

Jalan darat / akses kendaraan
Bervariasi; mengelilingi pulau sepanjang keliling sekitar 25 km x 19 km

A single road runs around the entire perimeter of Karkar Island, linking villages, cacao and coconut plantations, the school, and Gaubin Hospital. This ring road is the backbone of overland access on the island and the starting point for reaching the volcano's slopes from various sides.

Climbing Experiences

Karkar is not a recreational climbing destination, so its records come from islanders, local PNG video makers, and scientific sources. The set below spans crater/caldera footage from the summit, a rising volcanic plume, village life and fertile farming on the volcano's slopes, and the official Global Volcanism Program page. Every link was verified live before inclusion.
