Kemah tinggi berada di 4.500–5.000 mdpl sehingga penyakit ketinggian nyata. Di ruas pendekatan trekking: penyeberangan sungai setinggi lutut saat puncak lelehan, scree curam dan sisa salju di pass Ala-Kul, serta tidak ada sinyal telepon.

Description

Karakol Peak is the highest point of the Terskey Ala-Too range in the Tian Shan, about 36 km south-southeast of Karakol town in eastern Kyrgyzstan. The 1:200,000 topographic map gives 5,216 m with 1,673 m of prominence, though several Russian and Central Asian sources quote 5,280–5,281 m. It stands on the main ridge between Peak Slonenok ("Elephant Calf") and Peak Oguz-Bashi and is glaciated on every side: the Karakol East (5 km) and Karakol West (3.8 km) glaciers flow north, while the 7.3 km Bordu glacier drops down the western slope. The first ascent was made on 3 August 1937 by the Moscow climbers Nikolai Popov and Grigory Beloglazov with V. Ratsek, the local guide Kasymaly Baygazinov being part of the party. Its appeal is the combination of a comparatively easy approach up the spruce-forested Karakol valley with a summit that still demands technique: steep ice walls, corniced snow ridges and mixed ground graded 4B in the Russian system on the west ridge, up to 5A on other variants. The approach shares ground with one of Kyrgyzstan's most popular treks — the Karakol valley to Ala-Kul lake — so many walkers see the massif without ever climbing it. Guided expeditions usually run seven days out of Karakol town, with a high camp around 4,500 m on the shoulder above the Jety-Oguz pass.

For those who want to see Karakol Peak up close without climbing it, the approach is a popular trek in its own right. The On-Tor's Loop runs six days: day one from Karakol to Alps Camp (10 km, 400 m of gain), day two into the On-Tor gorge directly below the 5,216 m peak with glacier training, day three across the On-Tor and Kol-Tor glaciers over the On-Tor pass at 3,980 m — the high point — day four down the Kol-Tor valley and over the Panoramny pass at 3,600 m to Ala-Kul lake at 3,532 m, day five down the Keldike valley to the Altyn-Arashan hot springs, and the last day back to Karakol. A far lighter option is the classic two-to-three day Ala-Kul trek over the 3,860 m Ala-Kul pass between Altyn-Arashan and the Karakol valley. No special permit is needed, only a park ticket of roughly 100–200 som. Best from mid-July to mid-September; even in August there is steep scree and residual snow on the pass, river crossings can be knee-deep at peak melt, and there is no phone signal.

The main route on Karakol Peak starts from Karakol town, climbing the Karakol valley through Tian Shan spruce forest and meadows, then into the On-Tor gorge and On-Tor glacier directly beneath the peak's north side. A high camp is usually placed around 4,500 m on the shoulder above the Jety-Oguz pass before tackling the west ridge to the summit. An alternative operator variant approaches from the Jeti-Oguz valley via the Ailanysh valley, the Jety-Oguz pass at 3,500 m and the Semenovsky pass at 5,000 m onto the southeast ridge. The ground is combined rock and ice: steep ice walls, corniced snow ridges and mixed sections, so crampons, ice screws and rope work are mandatory. The west ridge is graded 4B in the Russian system, while variants over the east ridge of Peak Slonenok run 3B to 5A. The glaciers along the way — On-Tor, Kol-Tor and Karakol East/West — are heavily crevassed, making roped travel non-negotiable. Ridge weather deteriorates almost daily in the afternoon, so the timetable must have you descending before then.

Rather than an out-and-back, Karakol Peak can be traversed in full from the Metallurg pass over the summit and down to the Jety-Oguz pass. An August 2018 ascent report covered it in three days with two camps on the ridge. The route requires fixed rope on both rock and ice pitches and crosses two large snow-ice bulges on the connecting ridge before the top. The crux is the descent: the Jety-Oguz pass is specifically called out as exposed to rockfall. Weather dictates the timetable — the afternoon storm arrives around 18:00 almost every day, which on that trip forced a bivouac and left only about fifteen minutes on the summit in near-zero visibility. This traverse suits only parties comfortable on mixed alpine ground and able to move fast between morning weather windows.

The first is genuine summit reporting on the 5,216 m peak — sparse, and mostly in Russian, such as the 2018 traverse from the Metallurg pass to the Jety-Oguz pass: three days with two camps on the ridge, fixed rope on rock and ice pitches, and only fifteen minutes on top in complete whiteout because the near-daily afternoon storm arrived around 18:00.
