Description

Kang Guru (also spelled Kang Garu, 6,981 m) is the highest peak of the Larkya sub-range of the Nepalese Himalaya, in the Manang region of Gandaki Province. The Larkya range lies northwest of the Mansiri Himal (the Manaslu group) and northeast of the Annapurnas, so Kang Guru forms a dominant snow wall towering above the Nar–Phu valley. The mountain is best known for one of the deadliest avalanche accidents in Nepalese climbing history: on 20 October 2005 a powder-snow avalanche, triggered by hours of heavy snowfall, plowed into a French expedition's base camp, killing all seven French team members and eleven Nepalese staff—18 people in total. Since that tragedy Kang Guru has been almost never climbed, and its name now appears more often as the majestic backdrop of the Nar–Phu valley trek than as a climbing objective. This profile is compiled from Wikipedia, Wikidata, PeakVisor, and Mountain-Forecast; claims are framed around safety, not sensation.

Routes

Sisi Nar valley / selatan (rute ekspedisi, praktis tak lagi didaki)

Mendaki gunung ekspedisi teknis (6.981 m); sangat rawan longsoran salju
Ekspedisi beberapa minggu dari Koto → lembah Nar → base camp

Access to Kang Guru follows the Nar–Phu trekking route: from Koto in the Marsyangdi valley the trail climbs through the Nar Khola gorge to the Nar valley, where base camp is set at the mountain's foot. On 20 October 2005 a powder-snow avalanche struck a French expedition's base camp here and killed 18 people (seven French team members and eleven Nepalese staff)—one of the deadliest avalanche accidents in Nepalese climbing history. Kang Guru has been essentially unclimbed since; this route is presented as a historical and safety record, not a climbing recommendation.

Climbing Experiences

Kang Guru has been almost never climbed since the 2005 avalanche disaster, so its video record centres on its role as the dominant snow wall above the Nar–Phu valley in Manang. The links below include a short documentary specifically about the mountain plus several Nar–Phu valley trek records—an off-the-beaten-path route that passes directly beneath Kang Guru—showing the terrain and the mountain's close-up panorama.
