Description
Kalsubai (1,646 m) is the highest peak of the Indian state of Maharashtra, earning it the nickname the 'Everest of Maharashtra'. It rises in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats within the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, in Akole taluka of Ahilyanagar district, forming a natural boundary with Nashik district. It is not an active volcano — its massif is built of Deccan Trap basalt. The classic climb is a roughly 13 km round-trip day trek from Bari village with about 820 m of gain; permanent metal ladders on the steepest sections make it relatively accessible to fit beginners. A small temple to Goddess Kalsubai — by legend a local girl who helped villagers — stands at the summit, making the mountain both a pilgrimage and a trekking destination. Kalsubai is hugely popular as a 'night trek' to catch sunrise, with panoramas of the Sahyadri, the Bhandardara Dam and Arthur Lake in the distance.
Routes
Night Trek Kalsubai (summit matahari terbit)
Sedang (navigasi malam)The most popular variant: climbing the Bari route before dawn to reach the summit exactly at sunrise over the Sahyadri. Tackling the metal ladders and rocks in the dark demands a headlamp and extra care, but the reward is a sea of clouds and a sunrise panorama from Maharashtra's highest point. It is usually done in groups with a guide.
