Description

Mount Kaçkar (3,937 m) is the highest peak of the Kaçkar Mountains, the easternmost group of the Pontic range in north-eastern Turkey, inland from the Black Sea coast (Rize and Artvin provinces). Facing the sea, its slopes catch heavy rainfall, giving it rich high pastures (yayla), glacial lakes and small remnant glaciers that are rare in Anatolia. The mountain is orogenic (non-volcanic). The classic climb starts from villages such as Yukarı Kavrun and Olgunlar via the Dilberdüzü base camp, then up the north-east ridge to the summit — a strenuous but generally non-technical ascent in summer, making it one of Turkey's most popular trekking peaks. The area is also famous as a hut-to-hut and yayla-to-yayla trekking paradise linking the Ayder and Barhal valleys, with distinctive Hemşin culture, stone bridges and highland houses. The damp, foggy Black Sea weather keeps the climbing window relatively narrow, centred on mid-summer.

Routes

The classic ascent of Mount Kaçkar: from the village of Yukarı Kavrun or Olgunlar, hikers climb past yayla pastures and lakes to the Dilberdüzü base camp (around 2,900–3,000 m) to overnight. The next day the summit push starts before dawn, crossing remnant snowfields and the north-east ridge to the top. In mid-summer the route is generally non-technical but still strenuous and navigation-dependent because of frequent Black Sea fog. Local guides are commonly hired from the trailhead villages.

Trek lintas-yayla Kaçkar (Ayder/Çat ↔ Barhal)

Sedang–berat (non-teknis) — trek dataran tinggi melintasi pass dan padang
Beberapa hari (multi-hari hut/yayla-to-yayla)

Beyond the summit climb, Kaçkar is famous as a valley-to-valley trek linking the western side (Ayder/Çat valley) with the eastern side (Barhal/Yusufeli) over a series of passes and high pastures. The route follows rocky yayla, glacial lakes and Hemşin-culture villages, offering the Kaçkar landscape without necessarily reaching the top. It pairs well with the Mount Kaçkar summit as an optional high point mid-trek.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Kaçkar is experienced as a trekking peak: hikers climb from the Hemşin villages of the Black Sea hinterland, sleep at high lake-dotted base camps, then walk up to the 3,937 m summit. Documentaries and vlogs show the misty high pastures (yayla), glacial lakes, valley-to-valley routes, and even winter skiing. The sources below document real treks and ascents in the Kaçkar Mountains.
