Description

Jebel Uweinat is a Saharan massif listed at 1,934 m by Wikidata, spanning the border region of Egypt, Libya and Sudan. Its western side is a granite ring complex, while the east contains several sandstone plateaus; the highest point lies on the Italia Plateau. Karkur Talh provides access to rock-art sites and historical approaches to the uplands. A November 2009 account documents a three-day summit trek with bivouacs, while the March 2019 expedition reached the separate Northern Plateau. These accounts describe terrain and experiences at the time of travel, rather than confirming present access.

The historical trek passed the Belgian expedition sites, climbed onto the plateau above the valley, then crossed between two basalt hills into a side valley. The party stayed overnight for a rock-art survey and returned on day two. The duration describes the 2015 trek, not travel from a town.

Karkur Talh — Northern Plateau

The historical route reached an upper Karkur Talh bivouac via rock terraces and a plateau saddle. Day two climbed onto the Northern Plateau, explored its high point and rock-art sites, and returned; day three descended to base camp. The Northern Plateau is not the massif’s highest summit.

The party followed southwestern Karkur Talh to a saddle between plateaus and an upper-wadi bivouac. Day two reached the Italia Plateau summit via scree slopes and returned to camp; day three descended to the vehicles. The account distinguishes Bagnold’s cairn from the true high point marked by Marchesi’s cairn.

Climbing Experiences

The expedition accounts distinguish rock-art walks in Karkur Talh from climbs onto the high plateaus. In November 2009 a party used three days for the main summit via an upper-wadi bivouac; November 2015 included a two-day western-branch trek, and March 2019 a three-day trek to the Northern Plateau.
