Description

Jebel Uweinat (Gabal El Uweinat, ~1,934 m) is a remote desert massif at the tripoint of Egypt, Libya and Sudan in the heart of the Libyan Desert (eastern Sahara). A blend of granite ring complexes and sandstone plateau, it rises from waterless sand seas, and its valleys (karkurs) such as Karkur Talh hold one of the Sahara's richest concentrations of prehistoric rock art — thousands of paintings and engravings of herders, cattle and people thousands of years old. Uweinat is less a hiking peak than a multi-day 4x4 desert expedition; visitors walk sandy, rocky wadis to reach the rock-art sites and the rare springs that give the mountain its name ("uwaynat" meaning little springs).

Routes

Ekspedisi 4x4 & trek Karkur Talh (seni cadas)

Menengah untuk trek wadi, berat dari sisi logistik ekspedisi gurun
Ekspedisi ~7–14 hari dari Mesir/Sudan; trek wadi harian beberapa jam

The main way to experience Uweinat: a multi-day 4x4 journey across the Libyan Desert to the massif, then walking the sandy, rocky Karkur Talh valley to visit hundreds of prehistoric rock-art sites. The challenge is not the climb but remoteness, water, heat and navigation. An experienced expedition operator and official permits are essential.

Menengah — pendakian gurun berbatu tanpa jalur formal
Beberapa jam dari kemah wadi (medan berbatu)

From a wadi camp, some parties climb onto Uweinat's granite and sandstone plateau to reach high points (up to ~1,934 m) and sweeping desert panoramas across three countries. There is no marked trail; movement relies on experienced guides and remains bound to the expedition's logistics.

Climbing Experiences

Visiting Jebel Uweinat means undertaking a true desert expedition, not a weekend hike. Groups make a multi-day 4x4 journey across the Libyan Desert from Egypt or Sudan, camp near the massif, then walk sandy valleys (karkurs) to reach prehistoric rock-art sites and rare springs. Karkur Talh is the richest valley — filled with thousands of paintings and engravings of cattle, herders and people. The main challenge is not elevation but remoteness, water, heat and navigation logistics in one of the Sahara's loneliest corners.
