Description

Jebel ech Chambi (Djebel Chambi, جبل الشعانبي; ~1,544 m) is the highest mountain in Tunisia, standing about 17 km northwest of the town of Kasserine near the Algerian border. Its summit lies within Chambi National Park (established 1980), also a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1977, protecting Aleppo pine forest and wildlife such as Barbary sheep (mouflon) and gazelle. The climb is a friendly walk: a 4x4 track reaches about 1,300 m, then roughly two hours on foot through pine forest and dry rocky terrain lead to the summit, marked by a metal crescent monument left by Tunisian scouts after independence. The best season is roughly March–October. Most importantly: since December 2012 the area has been the theatre of Tunisian military operations against armed groups, with a history of landmines and access closures, so prospective climbers must check current security status and permissions before setting out.
