Description
Jebel Barkal (جبل بركل) is a flat-topped sandstone mesa standing alone on the Nile plain near the town of Karima in Sudan's Northern State, about 400 km north of Khartoum. Its cliffs rise roughly 100 metres above the surrounding plain — Wikipedia gives a height of about 104 m — while its top sits at around 287 m above sea level. Its most distinctive feature is a free-standing rock pinnacle on the southern side whose silhouette has long been read as a rearing cobra, the protective emblem of the god Amun. The hill has been sacred since Egypt's New Kingdom (about 1500 BC). Pharaoh Thutmose III took the region around 1450 BC and founded a temple complex for the ram-headed Amun of Napata; over more than 1,500 years at least 13 temples were built, rebuilt and enlarged at its base, among them the Temple of Amun with its rows of columns and ram sculptures, and the Temple of Mut, partly cut into the rock face and still holding coloured reliefs. Eight royal pyramids stand at the foot of the mountain, built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. In 2003 the area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "Gebel Barkal and the Sites of the Napatan Region" — five archaeological sites (Gebel Barkal, Kurru, Nuri, Sanam and Zuma) spread over more than 60 km of the Nile valley, representing the Napatan (900–270 BC) and Meroitic (270 BC–350 AD) cultures of the second kingdom of Kush. Locals call it Gebel Wad el-Karsani after a Muslim sheikh buried nearby whose tomb is still visited for blessings. For visitors the main draw is the short climb to the flat summit to watch the sun set over the Nile, the pyramids and the town of Karima — a habit shared by young Sudanese.

Climbing Experiences
Recorded Jebel Barkal visits almost always combine two things: wandering the pyramid and temple complex at the foot of the hill, then climbing to its flat top to watch the sun set over the Nile and the town of Karima. The videos and write-ups below show the rocky ascent, the enjoyable sand descent, the cobra-shaped rock pinnacle, and the atmosphere of local pilgrimage and visits. All links verified live.
