Description

Jabal Umm ad Dami (1,854 m) is the highest point in Jordan, standing at the southern edge of the Wadi Rum protected area, only a short distance from the Saudi Arabian border. Though far lower than Asia's giants, the climb stands out because it happens amid the red sandstone desert that made Wadi Rum famous. The trailhead lies roughly 25 km south of Wadi Rum Village — nearly 40 km once you zigzag between the rock formations — and is reachable only by 4x4, about an hour and a half from the Visitor Center. From there the hike crosses a sandy valley and passes an old Nabatean dam before rising over rocky ground with a few scrambling sections to a summit marked by a Jordanian flag: about 5 km round trip, some 430 m of gain, and 2–3 hours for a fit walker. The top looks out over the red desert of Wadi Rum to the north, the darker Saudi desert to the south, and on a clear day the Red Sea is said to be visible in the distance. With no waymarking, water or settlements anywhere nearby, the hike is almost always done with a local Bedouin guide.

Routes

Jalur normal dari titik turun 4x4 (lembah berpasir → bendungan Nabatea → punggung batu)

Sedang — hiking off-trail ±5 km pulang-pergi, beda tinggi sekitar 430 m, dengan beberapa bagian scramble batu; tidak teknis tetapi tanpa penanda jalur
2–3 jam pulang-pergi berjalan kaki, ditambah ±1,5 jam perjalanan 4x4 dari Visitor Center Wadi Rum tiap arah

The Umm ad Dami climb starts not from a village but from a 4x4 drop-off in the southern Wadi Rum desert — about 1.5 hours of driving from the Visitor Center, crossing dry wadis and weaving between rock formations. From there the route crosses a sandy valley, passes an old Nabatean dam, and rises over rocky ground. A few sections need light scrambling between large boulders before reaching the summit and its Jordanian flag. It is roughly 5 km round trip with about 430 m of gain; fit hikers finish in 2–3 hours. With no waymarking, water or settlements anywhere near, the hike is in practice always done with a local Bedouin guide.

Paket trek berpemandu Badui (Desa Wadi Rum → Umm ad Dami, sehari penuh)

Sedang — sama dengan jalur normal, tetapi dikelola operator: transport 4x4, pemandu, air, dan makan siang
Sehari penuh (jeep + hiking), opsional bermalam berkemah di gurun

The most common way to do it is a full-day guided package from Wadi Rum Village: a 4x4 drive of more than 25 km south (up to around 40 km once you detour between the notable rock formations), the summit hike with a Bedouin guide, then the return with an optional jeep tour along the way. Many operators add an overnight desert camp. Because southern Wadi Rum sees far fewer visitors than the busy north, the route also offers a quieter desert experience — with the trade-off of a long way out if anything goes wrong.

Climbing Experiences

A Umm ad Dami hike almost always starts in the back of a Bedouin 4x4: about ninety minutes across the Wadi Rum desert to the south, then a walk from a sandy valley onto rocky ground and scrambling up to the summit with its Jordanian flag. The English, Arabic and Czech vlogs and the travel-blog write-ups below record real ascents of Jordan's highest point, including the heat, the terrain and the view towards the Saudi border.
