Information
- Elevation
- 1.268 m
- Country
- Madagascar (MG)
- Location / Range
- Massif de l'Isalo, Wilayah Ihorombe, Madagaskar barat daya (gerbang di kota Ranohira, di sepanjang Route Nationale N°7)
- Mountain type
- Masif batu pasir non-vulkanik dari Kelompok Isalo (Isalo Group) berumur Trias–Jura Awal — bukan gunung berapi. Batu pasir berbutir kasar setebal hingga beberapa kilometer telah tererosi menjadi bentang 'ruiniform': puncak-puncak batu, plato, dan ngarai dalam hingga ~200 m. Kisaran ketinggian masif ~510–1.268 m.
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- -22.4351, 45.2884
- Difficulty
Description
Isalo National Park protects the Massif de l'Isalo, an ancient sandstone landscape in Madagascar's Ihorombe Region, roughly 700 km from Antananarivo along Route Nationale N°7, with its gateway at the town of Ranohira. Unlike many of Madagascar's rainforest destinations, Isalo is not forest but a Triassic–Jurassic Isalo Group sandstone massif eroded into a 'ruiniform' landscape of rock pinnacles, plateaus and deep canyons. Established as a national park in 1962 and covering about 81,540 ha, Isalo is one of Madagascar's most popular trekking destinations. Its trails link forested canyons hiding natural pools and waterfalls — such as the Piscine Naturelle, Cascade des Nymphes, Canyon des Makis and Canyon des Rats — with open ridgelines offering iconic rock formations and sunsets from La Fenêtre de l'Isalo. Ring-tailed lemurs, red-fronted lemurs and Verreaux's sifakas are often seen in shaded spots near the trails. All hikes must be accompanied by a certified local guide from Ranohira.

Routes
Circuit Crête (punggungan) & La Fenêtre de l'Isalo
SedangAn open ridgeline route past iconic sandstone formations — 'The Queen', 'The Boot', 'The Wolf' — usually combined with a stop at La Fenêtre de l'Isalo, a natural rock window that is a favourite sunset viewpoint.

Mudah–SedangA loop of two neighbouring canyons: Canyon des Makis (~1 km, a fairly level trail with natural pools and ring-tailed lemurs at the picnic area) and Canyon des Rats (~700 m) leading to a former royal village with palace-wall ruins, royal baths and Bara tombs.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of trekking Isalo centre on forested canyons hiding natural pools and waterfalls — Canyon des Makis, Canyon des Rats, the Piscine Naturelle — and open ridgelines with rock formations and sunsets. Videos and trip reports (French and English) show sandstone-walled canyon trails, lemurs in shaded spots, pools to swim in, and the fierce heat of the 'ruiniform' landscape.
