Description
Imbabura (~4,610 m) is an inactive stratovolcano in northern Ecuador that dominates Imbabura Province, standing above Lake San Pablo near Otavalo and facing the city of Ibarra. Its main summit is known as Taita Imbabura ("Father Imbabura") in local Kichwa culture, and the mountain is revered as guardian of the valley. Last active roughly 14,000 years ago, Imbabura is now a popular day-climb used to acclimatise before Ecuador's higher peaks. The normal route from La Esperanza or the village of Chirihuasi climbs through páramo grassland to a rocky ridge; the true summit is gained along a knife-edge crater rim that calls for light scrambling.

Routes
Punggungan Kawah ke Cumbre Máxima (Knife-edge)
Berat (eksposur, scrambling)Reaching the true summit (~100 m higher than the north top) means traversing a knife-edge crater rim with real exposure that demands care. Recommended only in clear weather when mist has not closed in.
Rute Normal dari Chirihuasi / La Esperanza (Taita Imbabura)
Sedang–Berat (scrambling ringan di puncak)The standard route starts from the village of Chirihuasi (above La Esperanza), climbing through páramo grassland to a rocky ridge; the main Taita Imbabura summit is gained with light scrambling on the crater rim. Elevation gain is about 1,600 m from the road-end, usually done in a single day with an early start.
Climbing Experiences
Imbabura (~4,610 m) is a popular northern-Ecuador day-climb, often used for acclimatisation. Climbers set out from La Esperanza or the village of Chirihuasi, ascending through páramo grassland to a rocky ridge, then traversing a knife-edge crater rim to the true summit (Taita Imbabura). Trip footage highlights fast-moving mist, exposure on the summit ridge, and the panorama of Lake San Pablo below.
