Description

Ili Egon, also called Mount Egon (1,703 m), is an active stratovolcano in the southeastern part of Flores island, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, near the bay of Maumere. After a violent eruption in 1925 it stayed quiet for decades, then reactivated in 2004 following about 75 years without significant eruptions. An eruption and landslide on 29 January 2004 forced thousands of residents (reported up to 6,000) to evacuate, and renewed activity in April 2008 again drove thousands from their homes. From late 2010, swarms of quakes and gas emissions placed Egon among the Indonesian volcanoes on the highest alert level. Its summit crater hosts active fumaroles and solfataras. So although the climb itself is short and non-technical, any decision to ascend depends entirely on the activity status monitored by Indonesia's volcanology agency (PVMBG).
