Description
Ighil M'Goun (4,068 m) is Morocco's second-highest peak and the high point of the Central High Atlas — far more remote and quiet than Toubkal. It is reached on a multi-day trek across the Tarkeddit plateau and the Aït Bougmez 'Happy Valley', through Amazigh villages. The long, exposed, windy summit ridge rewards with exceptional views.

Routes
Pendakian Ekspres dari Arousse (3 Hari)
Berat (tanjakan langsung, hari puncak panjang, kurang waktu aklimatisasi)A faster, more direct option from the Arousse trailhead on the northern side — suited to experienced trekkers with limited time. Day 1 climbs steeply from Arousse (~1,800 m) through pasture basins to a Tarkeddit camp (~3,200 m). Day 2 is summit day: continue to the ridge and summit (4,068 m) in 3–4 hours, then descend to camp. Day 3 descend fully to Arousse. Because acclimatisation time is shorter, AMS risk is higher — recommended only for those with experience above 3,000 m.
Route Segments
- 1
Arousse (~1.800 m) → Kemah Tarkeddit
Tanjakan langsung via padang pasture; aklimatisasi cepat
- 2
Kemah Tarkeddit → Puncak M'Goun (4.068 m)
Punggungan terbuka berangin; pemandangan luas Atlas Tengah
Traverse M'Goun Utara–Selatan via Gorge (6–7 Hari)
Berat (multi-hari terpencil, jauh dari kota, lembah sempit, opsional lintasan sungai)A circular or one-way traverse combining the M'Goun summit with the spectacular M'Goun Gorges — most popular among experienced trekkers. Starting from Aït Bougmez, ascend via Tarkeddit to the summit (same as the standard route), then descend the southern slope down the M'Goun River valley, which narrows into dramatic gorges. Along the way are remote Amazigh villages and natural hot springs. The gorge traversal sections sometimes require wading (shallow river crossings) depending on season. A local guide is strongly recommended.
Route Segments
- 1
Aït Bougmez → Azib Ikkis → Tarkeddit → Puncak M'Goun
Sama seperti rute standar hari 1–3
- 2
Puncak M'Goun → Lembah Sungai M'Goun (turun selatan)
Turun curam ke selatan; desa terpencil, pemandian air panas
- 3
Lembah M'Goun → Gorge M'Goun → Aït Bou Oulli
Ngarai sempit dramatis; mungkin perlu wading sungai di musim ramai air
Trek Aït Bougmez via Tarkeddit (4–5 Hari)
Sedang–berat (non-teknis, trek multi-hari, pass 3.450 m, punggungan terbuka berangin)The most popular route to the M'Goun summit, departing from Tabant in the Aït Bougmez Valley ('Happy Valley'). Day 1 follows the Assif N'Arouss Valley to Azib Ikkis (~2,234 m) — an Amazigh shepherd stone hut — through traditional villages. Day 2 climbs across grazing pastures and crosses the Aghouri Pass (~3,450 m), descending to camp on the Tarkeddit Plateau. Day 3 is summit day: a long ridge at 4,000+ m for about 5 km to Ighil M'Goun (4,068 m), 4–5 hours to the summit depending on snow, then descent to camp. Days 4–5 return by the same route or an alternative valley.
Route Segments
- 1
Tabant / Agouti (1.900 m) → Azib Ikkis
Lembah Assif N'Arouss; desa-desa Amazigh dan padang penggembalaan
- 2
Azib Ikkis → Tarkeddit Plateau (via Aghouri Pass)
Padang penggembalaan luas; Aghouri Pass ~3.450 m dengan pemandangan spektakuler
- 3
Tarkeddit → Puncak M'Goun (4.068 m)
Punggungan 4.000+ m sepanjang ±5 km; berangin, mungkin bersalju di musim dingin
Climbing Experiences
The M'Goun trek is a remote multi-day journey in the Central Atlas, through the Aït Bougmez 'Happy Valley' and Tarkeddit plateau to the summit ridge. Hikers highlight the remoteness, Amazigh culture, and the windy final ridge.
