Description

The Idanre Hills (Oke Idanre) are a cluster of granite inselberg hills in the town of Idanre, Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria, famous for their massive rock landscape and an old town perched on top. Their iconic climb ascends 682 hand-cut stone steps (Ibi Akaso) with five resting points to an ancient settlement inhabited by the Idanre people for close to a thousand years. On top is a run of heritage sites: Owa's Palace, the 1906 Old Court and an ancient prison, the Belfry, the mysterious Agboogun footprint, the Omi Apaara thunder water, and the Arun River, with Orosun Hill rising nearby. For its cultural and natural value, Oke Idanre has been on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List since 2007. The hill also inspired the collection 'Idanre and Other Poems' by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and is now one of Nigeria's best-known hiking attractions.

Climbing Experiences

Almost all Idanre accounts centre on the challenge of climbing the 682 stone steps to the old town on top. Vlogs show the physical effort of each flight, the five resting points, panoramas of Idanre town from above, and tours of heritage sites such as Owa's Palace and the Old Court. Some also cover the road trip from Akure and practical notes on entry fees and guides.
