Description
Nevado Huaytapallana (about 5,557 m) is the highest peak of the Huaytapallana range in the central Peruvian Andes, in the Junín Region not far from the city of Huancayo. Its summit is still glaciated—an important water source for the Mantaro valley and Huancayo—though the ice cover keeps shrinking with warming, a theme frequently covered in Peruvian environmental reporting. For local people the mountain is more than a natural feature: Huaytapallana is revered as an apu (sacred mountain) and hosts earth-honouring rituals (pagapu), especially around the Andean new year. For hikers and trekkers the main draw is the high-altitude trek from Huancayo to a chain of blue-green lagoons at the foot of the ice—a popular day trip made demanding by staying above 4,500 m. Reaching the true summit requires snow/ice climbing skills and glacier-crevasse management, so many visitors stop at the lagoons or the glacier edge. Acclimatising in Huancayo (~3,250 m) is strongly advised before ascending.

Routes
Climbing Experiences
The Huaytapallana trek is usually a day trip from Huancayo to a chain of blue-green lagoons at the foot of the glacier, generally above 4,500 m. Trekkers' reports highlight the beauty of the lagoons and ice edge, the altitude challenge (soroche), fast-changing weather, and the mountain's spiritual value as an apu for local communities. Some videos include practical guidance on reaching the site from Huancayo.
