Description
The Hochvogel (2,592 m) is a striking rock peak in the Allgäu Alps, right on the border of Bavaria (Germany) and Tyrol (Austria), often called the 'King of the Allgäu Alps' for its pyramidal shape and dominant stance. In recent years it has drawn worldwide scientific attention because a giant fissure splits its summit: a crack around 40 metres long that keeps widening, with an estimated 260,000 m³ of rock that could collapse toward the Hornbach valley on the Austrian side. Since 2014 a team of geologists from TU Munich led by Michael Krautblatter has monitored its movement with motion sensors, drone surveys and seismic-acoustic monitoring — making the Hochvogel a natural laboratory for rockfall early-warning systems, a hazard worsened by thawing permafrost linked to climate change. For hikers, the Hochvogel remains a classic but demanding Bergtour: its normal route (the Bäumenheimer Weg) from the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus crosses exposed rocky terrain partly secured with steel cables, so it is not a climb for beginners.

Day one is the approach from the Hinterstein/Giebelhaus area (Bavaria) to the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus (1,846 m, DAV). Day two climbs from the hut through the 'Kalter Winkel' and along the Bäumenheimer Weg — exposed rocky ridges and slopes partly secured with steel cables and pins, with easy climbing sections (UIAA I) to the 2,592 m summit. The summit sits right beside the monitored giant fissure; visitors are advised to take care and not linger at the crack. Descent is by the same route. It requires sure footing, tolerance of exposure, and an early start to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.

Climbing the Hochvogel (2,592 m) is a demanding alpine Bergtour, not a gentle hike. The usual base is the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus (1,846 m, DAV) on the Bavarian side or the Hermann-von-Barth-Hütte, then a summit push through the 'Kalter Winkel' and the Bäumenheimer Weg — exposed rocky terrain partly secured with steel cables at roughly T4–T5. Many climbers film the dramatic Allgäu Alps panorama and the moment of standing near the scientifically monitored giant summit crack. Experience reports stress the need for sure footing, a calm head on the exposed sections, an early start to avoid thunderstorms, and awareness of rockfall risk; some videos also explain the fissure and why the summit is predicted to one day collapse.
