Description

Hehuanshan (合歡山, 3,416 m) is a cluster of high peaks in Taiwan's Central Mountain Range, on the border of Nantou and Hualien counties at the far western edge of Taroko National Park. Unusually, it is one of the few alpine areas in Taiwan reachable easily and without a hard-to-get climbing permit, because Provincial Highway 14A cuts through the range up to the Wuling saddle at 3,275 m — the highest paved road point in Taiwan. From there the trail to the Main Peak is wide, paved and gradual, taking about 1.5–2 hours round-trip and offering 360-degree panoramas. Several other peaks — North Peak (3,422 m), East Peak (3,421 m) and West Peak — can be explored on more demanding trails. Hehuanshan is popular for sunrises, seas of clouds, rhododendron blooms, and winter snow.

Routes

Jalur Puncak Utama (Main Peak)

Mudah
3.70 km +200 m Sekitar 1,5–2 jam pulang-pergi

The most popular and easiest trail on Hehuanshan, leading to the Main Peak (3,416 m). The trailhead is around the 30.8 km marker of Provincial Highway 14A, not far from the Wuling saddle (3,275 m). The trail is wide, paved and gradual, totalling about 3.6–3.7 km round-trip with only around 200 m of elevation gain, making it accessible to many without technical gear or a special permit. The summit offers 360-degree panoramas of Taiwan's central ranges.

Climbing Experiences

Hehuanshan offers a rare experience: peaks over 3,400 m reachable relatively easily and without a complicated permit, thanks to road access up to the Wuling saddle. The Main Peak is known as a short, paved-trail hike, while the North Peak is steeper and rockier. The videos below capture hikers from various countries — from a relaxed day hike to the Main Peak to bagging several peaks over two days.
