Description

Hartz Peak (1,255 m) is the highest point of Hartz Mountains National Park, about 55 km south-west of Hobart and 17 km south-west of Geeveston, Tasmania. Its track is one of Tasmania's '60 Great Short Walks': a boardwalk across alpine herbfield and snow-gum woodland, passing tarns such as Lake Esperance, before a rocky, exposed final climb to the summit. The return trip is about 7.4 km with ~400 m of climbing (3–5 hours). Though relatively short, the weather here is notoriously changeable, so cold-weather gear is essential.

Routes

Hartz Peak Track (dari area parkir Hartz)

Grade 4 (jarak 7,4 km, naik ~400 m)
3–5 jam pulang-pergi

The official Hartz Peak Track—one of Tasmania's '60 Great Short Walks'—starts from the Hartz car park. Much of it is boardwalk across alpine herbfield and snow-gum woodland, passing tarns such as Lake Esperance, before a steeper, rocky, exposed final section to the summit (1,255 m). The return trip is 7.4 km with ~400 m of climbing (3–5 hours, Grade 4). Though short, the summit is very exposed and the weather changes quickly; carry warm layers and rain gear, and check the forecast.

A shorter, gentler alternative to the summit: following boardwalk and gravel from the Hartz car park about 1.5 km, then a ~300 m detour to Lake Esperance — an icy alpine tarn beneath a steep dolerite slope. A good option when summit weather is poor. Though rated easy, the terrain is open and alpine, so ice, snow and strong winds can make it harder; carry warm layers and rain gear. It is commonly taken as a side-trip on the Hartz Peak walk.

Climbing Experiences

Hartz Peak (1,255 m) is a popular southern-Tasmania day walk—~7.4 km return (3–5 hours, Grade 4) from the Hartz car park. Much of the track is boardwalk across alpine moorland before a rocky, exposed final section. The videos below capture trail conditions, alpine tarns, snowy scenes, and a summit radio activation, complemented by first-hand blog reports detailing the Lake Esperance & Ladies Tarn side-trips and the final dolerite-scree scramble.
