Description
Hanging Rock — also known as Mount Diogenes — is a striking ancient volcanic formation in the Macedon Ranges of central Victoria, about 70 km north-west of Melbourne. This former volcano rises roughly 718 m above sea level and around 105 m above the surrounding plain, forming a maze of distinctive rock towers and pillars. A short but rocky path leads visitors up through clefts in the stone to the summit, with open views over the valley and towards Mount Macedon. The site is culturally significant to its Traditional Owners and became internationally famous through Joan Lindsay's novel and Peter Weir's 1975 film 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', and is today a popular reserve and picnic destination.

SourceClimbing Experiences
The Hanging Rock experience centres on a short but rocky path that threads between clefts and volcanic pillars up to the summit of Mount Diogenes. Videos capture the maze-like boulders, the distinctive rock towers, and open views over the Macedon Ranges. Much of the content also ties the site to the 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' story and notes that the climb to the top usually takes only ~15–20 minutes, making it a good half-day trip from Melbourne.
