Information

Elevation
3.607 m
Country
Iraq (IQ)
Location / Range
Pegunungan Zagros, distrik Choman, Provinsi Erbil — Wilayah Kurdistan, Irak utara (kawasan Taman Nasional Halgurd-Sakran)
Mountain type
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
36.7342, 44.8625
Difficulty
Best Season
Akhir musim semi hingga musim gugur (sekitar Mei–Oktober), setelah salju mencair. Musim dingin bersalju dan menuntut perlengkapan alpine
Permits & Rules

Description

Halgurd (3,607 m) is the highest mountain lying entirely within Iraq, in the Zagros range in Choman district, Erbil Province, Kurdistan Region. Iraq's overall highest point is in fact Cheekha Dar (about 3,611 m — only some four metres higher), but that summit sits right on the Iranian border, is militarily monitored, and is very rarely climbed; in practice Halgurd is therefore the 'roof of Iraq' for hikers, and local media frequently call it the highest peak of Kurdistan and Iraq. The mountain is ringed by high lakes such as Bêrme Sard and Bêrmî Garm, while the valley below the summit — above Nawanda village — serves as summer pasture for nomadic Kurdish pastoralists (rewend). The approach runs from Erbil to Choman and then up to a base camp at the foot of the mountain; the official Zagros Mountain Trail records the Choman–Halgurd base stage as 16.3 km with about 1,455 m of ascent, graded high in difficulty. The climb to the summit itself is more a test of stamina than technique — steep, with a little scrambling — but the hazards are real and unusual: parts of these mountains still hold landmines and unexploded ordnance from the 1980s Iran–Iraq War, and the trail even passes UXO warning signs around 2,250 m. Snow covers the upper mountain for roughly 9–10 months of the year. The reward is a wide panorama over the still little-explored mountains of Kurdistan.

Routes

Although Halgurd is the peak most people climb, Iraq's technical high point is Cheekha Dar (about 3,611 m) — the name means 'black tent' in Kurdish — standing right on the border with Iran, some 6 km north of the village of Gundah Zhur. It was climbed by Ginge Fullen in November 2004, and its first winter ascent came in 2011. Climbing it is far more complicated than Halgurd, not because of technical difficulty but because of access: the area is mined, it lies in a militarily sensitive border zone, and climbers generally need an escort or local guide. The usual route goes from Erbil to Gundah Zhur, then roughly a day's walk to an old Kurdish hut at the foot of the mountain that serves as the launch point for the summit push. For most hikers, Halgurd remains the realistic objective.

Choman → base camp Halgurd (Zagros Mountain Trail, Etape 13)

Tinggi — menanjak terus sejauh 16,3 km dengan kenaikan ±1.455 m; melewati zona amunisi tak meledak
16.30 km +1455 m Satu hari penuh berjalan (menanjak sepanjang jalur)

The official Zagros Mountain Trail stage linking the town of Choman with the base camp at the foot of Halgurd, and the best-documented approach to the mountain. It runs 16.3 km with about 1,455 m of ascent and is essentially uphill the whole way: starting on paved road for roughly 5 km north of Choman, then switching to a water channel and 4x4 tracks interspersed with smaller paths, past remote settlements, farmland, streams and waterfalls. The trail ends at old stone village buildings and a nomadic camp area below the mountain. An important warning from the trail managers: around 2,250 m there are signs marking an unexploded-ordnance area — do not leave the wide, clear 4x4 track; mines also remain higher on the mountain, so a summit attempt should only be made with a trusted guide. Snow and ice cover the upper mountain for some 9–10 months a year, and winter-condition summit attempts demand mountaineering experience. Accommodation, camping, restaurants and guides are available in Choman and at the base camp area.

Pendekatan barat mandiri via Delza & Nelme (3 hari)

The alternative taken by some independent climbers. Using Choman as a base, the western approach starts from the hamlet of Delza and continues through the Nelme settlement, taking about three days round trip with two nights of camping. The hiker who documented this line judged the climb itself steep with a little scrambling but not technically hard. The hard part is everything else: his request for official permission was refused by the Peshmerga, and the area shares space with cross-border security dynamics. Landmines from the 1980s Iran–Iraq War remain uncharted around the mountain's periphery. This route therefore only makes sense for experienced climbers who genuinely understand the risks and the current access situation — and for most people, following the Zagros Mountain Trail with a local guide is by far the wiser choice.

Climbing Experiences

Documentation of Halgurd comes from a mix of foreign hikers exploring Iraqi Kurdistan, local climbers, and Kurdish media. Two things recur: first, the climb itself is non-technical — a long walk up rocky slopes from wherever the road above Choman ends; second, nearly every source stresses the need for a local guide, because parts of these mountains still contain landmines and unexploded ordnance. Several videos call Halgurd 'the highest peak in Iraq', which should be read with a caveat: Iraq's true highest point is Cheekha Dar on the Iranian border, while Halgurd is the highest lying entirely inside Iraq.
