Description

Gurja Himal (7,193 m) is a snow peak in Gandaki Province, Nepal, part of the Dhaulagiri massif in Myagdi District. It rises directly above the village of Gurja Khani on the southern side of the Dhaulagiri group and is one of the least-climbed 7,000 m peaks in the Himalaya. Its first ascent was on 1 November 1969 by a Japanese expedition. The mountain is best known worldwide for the October 2018 tragedy: a storm-triggered avalanche struck base camp and killed nine climbers, including South Korean alpinist Kim Chang-ho (the record holder for climbing all fourteen 8,000 m peaks without supplemental oxygen). It was called the worst climbing disaster in Nepal since the 2015 Everest avalanches. Because of its remoteness, steep terrain, and avalanche history, Gurja Himal remains a serious expedition objective rather than a trek. This profile is compiled from Wikipedia, Wikidata, and the PeakVisor peak database, with context from Kim Chang-ho's biography.

Routes

Sisi selatan via Gurja Khani (rute ekspedisi, jarang didaki)

Mendaki gunung ekspedisi teknis (7.000-an); rawan longsoran salju
Ekspedisi beberapa minggu dari Gurja Khani / base camp

The main approach to Gurja Himal starts from Gurja Khani village in Myagdi District, through forest and pasture to a base camp at the mountain's southern foot. The peak was first climbed by a Japanese expedition on 1 November 1969. Because of its remoteness, steep flanks and avalanche history—including the fatal October 2018 avalanche that struck base camp and killed nine climbers—this route demands a full expedition team, long acclimatisation and strict snow-hazard assessment. It is not a trekking objective and is very rarely attempted.

Climbing Experiences

Gurja Himal is a remote, rarely-climbed 7,000 m peak, so its video record centres on two things: views of the mountain from Gurja Khani village and the wider Myagdi area, and coverage of the October 2018 avalanche disaster that killed nine climbers—including South Korean alpinist Kim Chang-ho. The links below present panoramas from locals and explorers, plus international news footage of the disaster as a safety record.
