Description
Gunung Widodaren (2,614 m) is one of five post-caldera volcanic cones inside the Tengger Caldera, within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. Located west of Mount Bromo and adjacent to Mount Batok, it is best known for Goa Widodaren on its slopes — the only freshwater spring inside the caldera and a sacred site for the Hindu Tengger community. Water from the cave is used in the Mendhak Tirta ritual before the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony, when village elders collect holy water for offerings thrown into Bromo's crater. The name 'Widodaren' derives from the Javanese word 'widodari' (celestial nymph), reflecting a local belief that the peak is guarded by protective spirits.
