Description
Mount Tampomas (1,684 m) is a small andesitic stratovolcano in West Java, just north of the town of Sumedang. Although not currently erupting, it preserves clear volcanic features — relatively young lava flows on its eastern flank and hot springs around its base — and is catalogued by the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program. The area is now protected as the Tampomas Nature Recreation Park (TWA Gunung Tampomas) and is one of the most popular short hikes near Sumedang, often climbed as a single-day up-and-down trip via the Narimbang or Cibeureum trails, passing through forest and a ridge to the summit known as Sanghyang Taraje. The top holds a revered grave and an old crater area, with views over the Sumedang hills and surrounding Priangan mountains. Its moderate height and easy access from town make it well suited to beginners while retaining cultural and religious significance for local people.

Routes
Via Cibeureum (Cimalaka)
Sedang — jalur tektok populer, tanjakan hutan cukup terjal namun singkatThe busiest and often fastest route, starting from the Cibeureum basecamp in Cimalaka. The trail cuts through forest then climbs past the Sanghyang Lawang and Sanghyang Tikoro spots before reaching the Sanghyang Taraje summit. Popular as a day hike (tektok).
SourceVia Narimbang (Curug Ciputrawangi)
Sedang — lebih panjang dan rindang, cocok untuk lintas jalurStarting from Pos 1 near Curug Ciputrawangi in Narimbang. The path tends to be longer and shadier than Cibeureum, and many hikers combine the two into a traverse (up one, down the other) for scenic variety.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Mount Tampomas (1,684 m, Sanghyang Taraje summit) is the high point of Sumedang Regency and one of West Java's most popular day-hike (tektok) destinations. The main trails start from Cibeureum (Cimalaka) and Narimbang (via Curug Ciputrawangi), which can be linked into a traverse. Hiker accounts stress a tiring but relatively short forest climb, hot springs and small sites near the top, and open views toward Mount Ciremai and the Sumedang plains from Sanghyang Taraje. It suits beginners who already walk regularly, though the terrain gets slippery when wet.
