Description
Mount Sumbing in Jambi (2,507 m) — not to be confused with the better-known Mount Sumbing in Central Java — is a stratovolcano in Jangkat District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province, within the Bukit Barisan range and inside Kerinci Seblat National Park. Its summit is a complex region holding several crater remnants and a crater lake about 180 m across. According to the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, the volcano's only reported eruptions were moderate explosions in 1909 and 1921, making it a rarely active volcano. Remote and overshadowed by the much higher Mount Kerinci nearby, Jambi's Sumbing is seldom climbed and poorly documented in terms of trails; ascents generally push through dense montane forest and call for a local guide and solid navigation. The area is ecologically significant as part of the Kerinci Seblat conservation landscape, a habitat for protected Sumatran flora and fauna.
