Description
Mount Sorik Marapi (2,145 m) is an active stratovolcano in the Barisan Mountains of Sumatra, administratively in the Puncak Sorik Marapi district of Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra, and within Batang Gadis National Park. Its summit holds a roughly 600 m-wide crater lake with sulfur deposits, alongside a parasitic crater called Danau Merah and several solfatara fields on the eastern flank. The volcano has produced several small phreatic eruptions through the 19th and 20th centuries (including 1830, 1879, 1892, 1893, 1917, 1970, 1986 and 1987) and is currently classed as normally active, monitored from a PVMBG observation post in Sibanggor Tonga. Since the 2010s the area has been developed for geothermal energy (Sorik Marapi Geothermal Power); in 2021 a hydrogen-sulfide gas leak at one well killed several workers, underscoring the real volcanic-gas hazard here. Climbs typically begin at Sibanggor Julu village, ascending through forest to the crater-lake summit.

Routes
Jalur Sibanggor Julu (Puncak & Danau Kawah Sorik Marapi)
Menengah–menantangThe official ~7 km trail from Sibanggor Julu village, the main gate and buffer village of Batang Gadis National Park. Terrain shifts from gentle rubber plantations, rocky former sulfur-mining ground, primary and secondary forest, pandanus zones, to steep rocky scrub near the top. There are five rest posts and almost no clean water along the way. The summit reveals a turquoise/blue crater lake with sulfurous steam; hikers are advised to use a local guide and beware of volcanic gases.
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Mount Sorik Marapi (2,145 m) experience in Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra almost always starts at Sibanggor Julu village, the buffer settlement of Batang Gadis National Park and the main climbing gateway. Trip reports describe a roughly 7 km trail that shifts through rubber plantations, rocky former sulfur-mining ground, forest, pandanus zones, and steep rocky scrub, with five rest posts and almost no water source. The main draw is a turquoise/blue crater lake with sulfurous steam near the summit, often called the highest crater lake in North Sumatra. Sources emphasise using a local guide, caution around the active volcano's sulfur gases, and note the presence of a local customary rule.
