Description
Mount Sindoro (3,136 m) is a semi-active stratovolcano in Central Java standing side by side with Mount Sumbing, separated by the Kledung plateau. Its summit holds a small lava dome and a crater area that still emits sulphurous gas. Sindoro is very popular with hikers for its easy access from the Kledung route, its wide savanna near the top, and its sea of clouds and sunrise views backed by Sumbing, Merbabu, Merapi, and Prau. Though non-technical, the trail climbs almost relentlessly through tobacco fields, forest, then open rocky terrain, so it still demands good fitness. The Kledung basecamp is the favourite starting point, while the Sigedang/Tambi route on the Wonosobo side begins from high-altitude tea plantations.

Routes
Via Kledung (Temanggung) — jalur utama
Sedang (non-teknis, menanjak terus-menerus)Sindoro's most popular route, starting from the Kledung basecamp on the plateau between Sindoro and Sumbing. It passes tobacco fields, forest, then open rocky terrain up to the wide savanna and summit crater. The basecamp is well-equipped and the trail is the busiest, making it the favourite for chasing the sea of clouds and sunrise.
SourceVia Sigedang / Tambi (Wonosobo)
SedangAn alternative route from the Wonosobo side starting at the Tambi/Sigedang tea plantations at an already high elevation, so the vertical distance to the summit is shorter than from Kledung. It suits those wanting a faster ascent, with tea-plantation views at the start.
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Mount Sindoro experience is most often via the Kledung route (Temanggung), relatively beginner-friendly yet almost relentlessly steep. Its draws are the wide savanna near the top, the sea of clouds, and sunrise views backed by Sumbing, Merbabu, Merapi, and Prau. The videos below document real climbs from basecamp to the summit crater, including trail conditions, costs, and the atmosphere of camping on the savanna.
