Description
Mount Semeru, whose highest point Mahameru rises to 3,676 metres, is the tallest mountain on Java and an active stratovolcano. Within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, its trail starts at Ranu Pani and passes the iconic Ranu Kumbolo lake. The summit push to Mahameru is notoriously hard on steep, slippery volcanic sand, and the crater regularly erupts, so climbing follows national-park rules and restrictions.

Climbing Experiences
Accounts of climbing Mount Semeru almost always centre on two things: the beauty of Ranu Kumbolo lake — 'a climbers' paradise' — and the brutal summit push to Mahameru over steep volcanic sand, often described as 'two steps up, one step sliding back'. Climbers also note the bitter cold, the sea-of-clouds sunrise, and the importance of respecting safe limits and park schedules since Semeru is still active.
