Description

Gunung Sedingin is an inactive volcanic peak standing at 1,555 metres in Merangin Regency, Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. It forms part of the Masurai volcanic complex — the last surviving ancient caldera on Sumatra — a large Quaternary stratovolcano system in which the Sedingin caldera itself lies at approximately 2,237 metres, while the Masurai summit reaches 2,916 metres. The entire area lies within Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and within the Merangin Jambi UNESCO Global Geopark. According to the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program, no Holocene eruptions have been recorded from this volcanic complex. The surrounding landscape is one of Sumatra's richest biodiversity zones, sheltering Sumatran tigers, Asian tapirs, and thousands of endemic plant and animal species. Note: detailed trail information specific to Gunung Sedingin is very limited; climbers should contact TNKS authorities or local guides in Merangin before attempting an ascent.
