Description
Mount Rinjani on Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, is Indonesia's second-highest volcano at 3,726 metres. Its caldera holds the Segara Anak lake with the still-active Barujari cone. Climbs commonly go via Sembalun and Senaru, often combined with the Torean route, and are famous for the 'Hill of Regret' and a punishing sandy summit push. Protected as Mount Rinjani National Park, it is one of Southeast Asia's most iconic treks.

Stay Alert & Safety Tips
Be careful to avoid scammers. Information compiled from climber experiences & trusted sources.
- reportScams Book ONLY through the official eRinjani app. Do not buy 'slots' or tickets from touts/unofficial parties — they may be fake and you'll be turned away at the entrance post.
- infoInfo Use officially registered porters & guides, and agree on price and services upfront in writing so there are no surprise charges.
- thunderstormWeather Weather on the Sembalun ridge and the descent to Segara Anak lake changes fast; the Torean trail is slippery and risky. Make sure your fitness and logistics are sufficient.

Safety Statistics
Moderate riskAggregated for prevention and awareness — not a casualty list. Read alongside the safety tips below.
Indicative — small sample size.
Period 2025–2025 · Single-year (2025) data from Balai TNGR: 80,214 trekking visits, 3 climbers died — the death-per-visit ratio is very low (0.004%), but THIS FIGURE IS MISLEADING on its own: in the same year 58 trekkers fell and only 3 were fatal. The danger is real (falls, hypothermia), but there is no structured multi-year fatality-rate baseline for Rinjani. Single source, indicative. · rate computed from sourced totals · single source
Causes of death
- Fall est.
💡 Falls are the most frequent incident on Rinjani (58 cases through 2025); the trail is narrow with loose scree along ravine edges — keep well back from cliff rims, don't take selfies at the edge, and descend slowly when tired.
Source - Exposure / hypothermia est.
💡 Summit temperatures can approach freezing and storms arrive fast (the 2007 tragedy killed seven students from cold); carry warm layers and rain gear, and abort the summit push when the weather deteriorates.
Source - Lost / disoriented est.
💡 Several trekkers get lost each year, often by using illegal trails without a guide; use the official routes (Sembalun/Senaru), register with TNGR, and hire a local guide.

Notable incidents
- 2007 Seven students die of cold in a storm (March 2007)
On 12 March 2007 seven students died on Rinjani from cold after being caught in a storm and running out of supplies, made worse by inadequate gear. Lesson: bring layered warm clothing, sufficient logistics, and respect the decision to turn back.
Source - 2018 Lombok earthquake traps hundreds of trekkers, landslides block trails (2018)
The 2018 earthquake struck Rinjani while more than 800 trekkers were on the mountain; landslides blocked the descent and killed several people, triggering a mass search-and-rescue effort until the last trekkers were evacuated. Lesson: Rinjani is an active volcano in an earthquake zone — understand landslide risk and follow evacuation guidance.
Source - 2025 A string of foreign trekkers fall into ravines (2025)
Through 2025 Balai TNGR recorded 58 trekkers falling with 3 deaths among 80,214 visits; several victims fell hundreds of metres into ravines on the narrow summit trail. Lesson: Rinjani's summit trail demands careful footing, no rushing and no approaching the cliff edge.

Climbing Experiences
Climbing Mount Rinjani usually means the Sembalun and Senaru routes, often combined with Torean over 3–4 days. Climbers frequently describe the exhausting 'Hill of Regret', the beauty of Segara Anak lake with its Barujari cone, the hot springs, and the gruelling pre-dawn sandy-gravel summit push. Some accounts also touch on the risks and the value of hiring local porters/guides.
