Description

Mount Raung (about 3,332 m; the true summit 'Puncak Sejati' is often cited around 3,344 m by climbers) is the most active and one of the most challenging stratovolcanoes on Java, standing at the island's eastern end where the regencies of Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, and Jember meet. Its defining feature is a gaping caldera roughly 2 km wide and about 500 m deep, ringed by a bare grayish rim. Reaching Puncak Sejati via the Kalibaru route is considered one of Java's hardest climbs: hikers traverse a thin, exposed ridge above the caldera abyss, passing landmarks such as 'Puncak Tusuk Gigi', using fixed ropes and scrambling. Other routes such as Jambewangi (Puncak Bendera/Pandawa) and Sumber Wringin are gentler and end at the caldera rim without the technical ridge.

Routes

Via Kalibaru (Banyuwangi) → Puncak Sejati

Sangat sulit / teknis (scrambling kelas 3, tali fix, punggungan tereskpos)
3–4 hari pulang-pergi (summit attack dini hari dari Pondok Sumur/Pos 8)

The route to Raung's true summit, Puncak Sejati (about 3,344 m), and one of the hardest climbs on Java. From the Kalibaru basecamp hikers pass forest and posts up to Pondok Sumur, then make a summit attempt along a thin ridge exposed on both sides of the caldera abyss, crossing famous points such as 'Puncak Tusuk Gigi' with fixed ropes and climbing technique. A guide, experience, and technical gear are mandatory.

Via Sumber Wringin (Bondowoso) → bibir kaldera

Sedang (non-teknis, berakhir di bibir kaldera, bukan Puncak Sejati)
2 hari pulang-pergi

A traditional, gentler route from the Bondowoso side via Sumber Wringin, threading through forest to Raung's caldera rim without crossing the technical Puncak Sejati ridge. It is often used to enjoy the giant caldera views and as a non-technical alternative for climbers not targeting the true summit.

Climbing Experiences

The Mount Raung experience is dominated by the Kalibaru route (Banyuwangi) to Puncak Sejati — one of Java's hardest climbs, demanding scrambling, ropes, and nerve to cross an exposed ridge above the caldera abyss. The videos below capture real expeditions: from basecamp, forest posts, and pre-dawn summit attempts, to iconic points such as 'Puncak Tusuk Gigi' and the rim of Raung's giant caldera.
