Description
Gunung Pengelengan (also known as Gunung Penggilingan or Puncak Beratan) is a peak rising to 2,153 metres above sea level in the Bedugul highlands of Buleleng Regency, Bali. Positioned on the eastern rim of the ancient Beratan caldera, it is among the four highest summits on the island. The standard hiking route departs from Pura Yeh Ketipat in Desa Wanagiri and covers roughly 14 kilometres return, with an ascent typically completed in about four hours. The mountain's dense forest is a habitat for the endemic Balinese palm Pinanga arinasae (nyabah), studied by researchers from the Bali Botanical Garden. The name 'Pengelengan' derives from the Balinese word ngelengan (to look around), linked to a local legend of a nobleman who surveyed the surrounding landscape from the summit.
