Description
Mount Paektu (2,744 m) — known as Baekdusan in Korean and Changbaishan in Chinese — is an active stratovolcano on the North Korea–China border and the highest point of the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria. Its summit holds a caldera about 5 km wide filled by Heaven Lake (Tianchi/Cheonji), a deep sapphire-blue crater lake at roughly 2,189 m ringed by 16 peaks. The mountain is famous for the 946 CE Millennium Eruption — one of the most powerful eruptions in recorded history (about VEI 6) that formed today's caldera and spread ash as far as Japan. Paektu carries deep cultural and spiritual meaning: it is regarded as the birthplace of the Korean nation (the Dangun legend) and appears in the national anthems of both North and South Korea. Visitors usually reach Heaven Lake from the Chinese side via the North route (easiest, closest to the lake), the West route (climbing 1,442 steps for a full panorama), or the seasonal South route; the eastern North Korean side is accessed on official tours from Samjiyon.

Routes
Rute Barat / West Slope (sisi Tiongkok) — 1.442 anak tangga
Sedang (menaiki 1.442 anak tangga; fisik ringan–sedang)The West route offers the fullest panorama of Heaven Lake and alpine flower meadows, but requires climbing 1,442 steps from the shuttle drop-off. The ascent takes about an hour, with several rest stops along the way. The views along the route are open and considered breathtaking in clear weather.
SourceRute Utara / North Slope (sisi Tiongkok) — akses termudah ke Tianchi
Mudah (kendaraan/bus wisata sampai dekat danau, sedikit berjalan kaki)The North route is the most popular and easiest way to Heaven Lake on the Chinese side. From the park gate, an eco-bus and then an off-road vehicle carry visitors close to the summit, leaving only a short walk to the lake edge. It concentrates many highlights: the 68 m Changbai Waterfall, hot springs, the Green Abyss pool, and an underground forest. Ideal for first-timers, though the lake is often hidden by fog.

Mudah–sedang (kendaraan/funicular ke puncak; opsi turun berjalan ke Danau Chon)From the North Korean side, Mount Paektu is accessed on official guided tours, usually via a chartered flight to Samjiyon County in Ryanggang Province. From a parking area near the top, visitors can walk about 3 km to the summit or take a vehicle/funicular; weather permitting, a path descends to the edge of Lake Chon (Heaven Lake). Access is only through official DPRK tour operators.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Visiting Mount Paektu/Changbai centers on Heaven Lake (Tianchi/Cheonji) inside the summit caldera. From the Chinese side, the North route brings visitors very close to the lake edge by bus/vehicle, while the West route requires climbing 1,442 steps for a full panorama; frequent fog often hides the lake, so a clear view is considered lucky. From the North Korean side, this sacred mountain is reached on official tours from Samjiyon in Ryanggang Province. The videos and travel accounts below document real visits to the summit and crater lake from different sides.
