Description

Paektu Mountain (2,744 m) — known as Baekdusan in Korean and Changbaishan (长白山) in Chinese — is an active stratovolcano straddling the border between North Korea and China's Jilin Province, and the highest peak of the entire Korean Peninsula. Its summit is crowned by a massive caldera roughly 4.5 km across that cradles Heaven Lake (Tianchi / Cheonji), one of the world's highest and deepest crater lakes at 2,189 m elevation, with an average depth of 213 m and distinctively clear blue-green water. A cataclysmic eruption around 946 CE — known as the 'Millennium Eruption of Baekdu' — ejected an estimated 100–120 km³ of volcanic material, among the largest in the past 5,000 years, forming the present caldera and lake. For Koreans both north and south, Paektu is a sacred mountain: mythologically the birthplace of Dangun, the legendary founder of the ancient Joseon kingdom, and a potent symbol of national identity. The Chinese side (Changbaishan) is open to tourists via commercial shuttle buses and over 1,400 steps to the crater rim; the North Korean side is only accessible via government-organised DPRK tours.

Routes

Lereng Barat (Sisi China — West Slope) via Wanda Changbaishan Resort

Sedang — akses serupa dengan lereng utara; shuttle bus dan tangga; pemandangan berbeda
±4–6 jam kunjungan (shuttle + tangga berbeda dari lereng barat)

A popular alternative from the Chinese side via the Wanda Changbaishan International Resort on the western slope. This route offers views of Heaven Lake from a different angle and usually sees fewer visitors than the north slope. From the resort, a shuttle bus takes visitors to a service centre near the crater rim, followed by steps to the caldera edge. The area is also known as one of China's leading winter ski resorts.

Lereng Utara (Sisi China — North Slope) — Rute Utama Changbaishan

Sedang — jalur beraspal/tangga, tidak ada pendakian bebas; fisik memadai cukup; suhu dingin di tepian kawah
±3–5 jam kunjungan (termasuk shuttle bus ~1 jam + 1.400+ tangga ~1–1,5 jam naik, ~45 menit turun)

The most popular route to the Heaven Lake crater rim from the Chinese side. Visitors buy tickets at the Changbaishan nature reserve gate, then board a shuttle bus for around 45–60 minutes to a car park at roughly 1,800 m elevation. From there, over 1,400 stone steps must be climbed to reach the crater rim at about 2,100 m. At the top of the stairs, the view directly into Heaven Lake (Tianchi, 2,189 m) opens — a turquoise-blue crater lake 4.5 km across filled with crystal-clear freshwater. Visibility depends heavily on weather: thick fog frequently blocks the lake, especially in the afternoon in summer. Best to arrive early morning before mist rises.

Rute Korea Utara (Sisi DPRK — via Samjiyon)

Terbatas — tidak bisa didaki bebas; hanya via tur resmi pemerintah DPRK; pengalaman berbeda dari sisi China
±1 hari penuh (tergantung tur; akses via penerbangan Pyongyang → Samjiyon)

The only way for foreign visitors to access Paektu Mountain from the North Korean side is through an official DPRK-government-organised tour. This typically involves flying from Pyongyang to Samjiyon airport (the nearest town), then driving to the mountain area. The experience differs significantly from the Chinese side: far fewer visitors, a more reverential and nationalistic atmosphere, and access to Heaven Lake (called Cheonji) from the North Korean rim. This route carries a unique atmosphere — the mountain is Korea's most sacred symbol, the site where the legendary founder Dangun established the ancient kingdom and the mythological birthplace of Kim Jong-il.

Climbing Experiences

Paektu Mountain (Baekdusan/Changbaishan, 2,744 m) can be reached from two very different sides: the Chinese side (Changbaishan) open to the general public with commercial shuttle buses and over 1,400 steps to the crater rim; and the North Korean (DPRK) side accessible only via official guided tours. Both lead visitors to the rim of the massive caldera that holds Heaven Lake (Tianchi/Cheonji) — the legendary crater lake. The videos and articles below document real journeys from both sides, the crater in all seasons, and the unique experience of seeing the same lake from two very different countries.
