Description
Gunung Pabeasan (~572 m a.s.l., rising about 28 m above the surrounding terrain) is a hill in the Anyer area on the boundary between Serang Regency and Cilegon City, Banten — some 100 km west of Jakarta. In Dutch colonial times it was known as 'Piek van Anjer' or 'Pic d'Anger'. Its Sundanese name ('pabeasan' = a place to store rice) is tied to a local legend: a dragon is believed to guard a pedaringan (clay rice vessel) at its summit and, according to local belief, descends on full-moon nights to the 'Kawah Naga'/Kawah Cikaraha in the rice fields below, bringing bountiful harvests. Today Gunung Pabeasan is a light local hiking destination offering views of rice fields, hills, and the Sunda Strait from its top. The nearest higher summit is Gunung Tukung (708 m), about 2.8 km to the southeast.
