Description

Mount Olympus (2,918 m) is the highest mountain in Greece and, in mythology, the home of the Olympian gods. This limestone massif rises dramatically almost straight from the Aegean coast, with many peaks — the highest being Mytikas (2,918 m), followed by Skolio and Stefani, the 'Throne of Zeus'. Climbs usually start at the Prionia trailhead, ascending the well-built E4 trail to Refuge A 'Spilios Agapitos' for an overnight, then continuing to Skala peak before the crux: a Class 3 scramble across the Kaki Skala ('bad stairway') ridge to Mytikas. As Greece's first national park and a cultural-natural heritage site, Olympus blends mythological meaning, biodiversity, and a demanding climb.

Routes

Gortsia → Plateau Muses → Mytikas (rute alternatif/traverse)

Berat; jalur lebih panjang lewat plateau, seksi puncak tetap scrambling
2 hari (lebih panjang; cocok untuk lingkar traverse)

A longer alternative approach from the Gortsia trailhead crossing the Muses Plateau (Oropedio ton Mouson) with Refuge C (Apostolidis), often used for a circular traverse linking several peaks before reaching Mytikas.

Prionia → Refuge A → Skala → Mytikas (jalur E4)

Berat; pendekatan non-teknis, seksi puncak Kaki Skala scrambling kelas 3 berbatu lepas & terbuka
2 hari (±3 jam ke Refuge A; ±3 jam Refuge A→Skala; ±1 jam scrambling ke Mytikas)

The most popular route to Mytikas. From the Prionia trailhead (~1,100 m) the E4 trail climbs ~6 km with ~1,000 m gain to Refuge A 'Spilios Agapitos' (~2,100 m) for an overnight, then continues to Skala peak (2,882 m). From Skala the crux is a Class 3 scramble across the Kaki Skala ('bad stairway') ridge to Mytikas.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mount Olympus to Mytikas peak (2,918 m) usually takes two days. Day one ascends from the Prionia trailhead (~1,100 m) about 6 km along the well-built E4 trail to Refuge A 'Spilios Agapitos' (~2,100 m) for an overnight. Day two continues to Skala peak (2,882 m), then tackles the crux: a Class 3 scramble across the open, loose-rock Kaki Skala ridge to Mytikas, or via the Louki couloir. Hikers describe the approach to Skala as non-technical, but the final section demands hands and feet, a head for heights, and caution about afternoon storms.
