Description
Mount Norikura (乗鞍岳, Norikura-dake; 3,026 m) is a multi-peaked, potentially active stratovolcano on the Gifu–Nagano border, part of the Hida Mountains (Japan's Northern Alps) within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. Its name means "riding saddle," after a silhouette resembling a horse's saddle. The high point, Kengamine, sits among several other summits alongside eight plains and a dozen crater lakes formed by past eruptions; it ranks as Japan's third-tallest volcano after Fuji and Ontake. Norikura is renowned as the most accessible of Japan's 3,000 m peaks: the Norikura Skyline — the country's highest paved road — and shuttle buses carry visitors to Tatamidaira (~2,700 m), leaving only about a 1.5–2 hour walk over rocky slopes to the main summit. Thanks to this beginner-friendly access, families and casual walkers can sample the alpine air, flower meadows (rhododendron, lily, komakusa) and wildlife such as the rock ptarmigan (a Japanese natural monument) without technical climbing. Even so, the altitude, fast-changing weather and lingering snow demand preparation. Norikura is listed among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.

Routes
Rute Klasik — Tatamidaira (畳平) → Katanokoya → Kengamine (剣ヶ峰) 3.026 m
Mudah/pemula: jalur berbatu jelas tanpa bagian teknis; hanya menuntut kebugaran ringan & waspada ketinggianThe most popular route uses Japan's highest road access: visitors take a shuttle bus (private cars are banned) from Norikura Kogen on the Nagano side or Hirayu Onsen on the Gifu side to the Tatamidaira terminal at ~2,700 m. From there a clear rocky footpath climbs past the Katanokoya hut and open slopes, crossing the volcanic ridge and several crater lakes, then up to the main Kengamine summit (3,026 m) — usually 1.5–2 hours one way. Because the trailhead is already high, it is considered Japan's easiest 3,000 m ascent and family-friendly, though thin air, wind and early-season snow still require care. The bus season (roughly July–October) sets the climbing window; outside it the road and trail are snowbound.
Route Segments
- 1
Tatamidaira → Katanokoya (kaki lereng puncak)
Jalur berbatu landai dari terminal bus melewati padang alpine dan danau kawah
- 2
Katanokoya → Puncak Kengamine (3.026 m)
Tanjakan batu terakhir ke puncak tertinggi; udara tipis & angin terbuka, tanpa bagian teknis
