Description

Mount Merapi, on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta, is one of the world's most active volcanoes at roughly 2,930 metres (its height shifts with eruptions). The most popular trail is via Selo (Boyolali). Because of its intense activity, summit climbing is officially closed and the safe limit for hikers is Pasar Bubrah, a rocky flat below the peak that is also wrapped in local folklore. Merapi remains a cultural and natural icon of Yogyakarta but must be approached with great caution.

Routes

Via Selo (New Selo)

Sedang–berat
1 hari / semalam

Jalur umum dari Selo, Boyolali menuju Pasar Bubrah; pendakian ke kubah lava umumnya dilarang.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Mount Merapi almost all take the Selo route (Boyolali) and stop at Pasar Bubrah — the rocky flat that marks the safe limit below the summit. Many describe night hikes for sunrise, biting wind, the lights of Selo town far below, and the folklore attached to Pasar Bubrah. Important note: because of high volcanic activity, summit climbing is officially closed, so some of the accounts below are older and/or only reach the safe limit.
