Description
Mount Masurai (about 2,935 m; sources cite a range of 2,916–2,980 m) is an old, now-inactive complex volcano on the island of Sumatra, administratively spread across three districts of Merangin Regency, Jambi — Lembah Masurai, Jangkat and Sungai Tenang. It lies within Kerinci Seblat National Park as protected conservation forest. Masurai is the remnant of a very large complex volcano: its eastern side preserves a half-caldera, while two cones rise on the western side, one of them cradling two crater lakes, Danau Kumbang and Danau Mabuk. The mountain feeds several springs, including the source of the Batang Tembesi river on its northern flank, which waters surrounding villages and drains into the Batanghari system. For hikers, Masurai offers dense montane rainforest, crater lakes and Bukit Barisan panoramas; the climb typically takes two days with an overnight camp. Documented exploration dates back to a Japanese research expedition in 1988, followed by student nature-lover expeditions in the 1990s that mapped the trails and located Danau Mabuk.

Routes
Via Sungai Lalang (jalur utama) — puncak & Danau Kumbang
Menantang — jalur hutan panjang dengan tanjakan curam "tanjakan syaithon"The most common route starts from Sungai Lalang village (Lembah Masurai district, Merangin), with a basecamp at about 1,365 m, roughly 3 hours' drive from Bangko. The climb pushes through dense montane rainforest, the hardest part being the steep "tanjakan syaithon" before reaching the upper ridge. Peak 1 is reached in about 5–6 hours, with Danau Kumbang (~2,532 m) only about 30 minutes further; Danau Mabuk is a roughly 4-hour round-trip side trip. Usually done over 2–3 days with camping.
SourceVia Tanjung Berugo (jalur alternatif)
Menantang — jalur hutan dengan pos-pos pendakianAn alternative route starting from the Tanjung Berugo area, used by some climbers instead of Sungai Lalang. It likewise threads through dense forest with staged rest posts toward the summit area and crater lakes, as documented in climbers' trip reports.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Gunung Masurai in Merangin, Jambi is known as the "sleeping mountain" with two crater lakes — Danau Kumbang and Danau Mabuk — inside Kerinci Seblat National Park. The sources below show real climbs from several trailheads (Sungai Lalang, Tanjung Berugo and Renah Alai): vlogs of the walk in to the lakes, accounts of the steep "tanjakan syaithon", two-day camping expeditions, and a detailed blog report of getting lost near Danau Kumbang. Every link was verified live before inclusion.
