Description

Gunung Lesung is a dormant volcano standing 1,885 metres above sea level in Munduk Village, Banjar District, Buleleng Regency, Bali. The mountain takes its name from the distinctive crater at its summit which, viewed from above, resembles a mortar (lesung) — or alternatively, an open eye — a feature unique among Balinese peaks. Situated a short distance from volcanic Lake Tamblingan, hikers reaching the top are rewarded with sweeping views over the shimmering lake and the forests of North Bali. The summit area shelters three sacred Hindu shrines — Pura Naga Loka, Pura Bukit, and Pura Endek — along with the revered Goa Naga Loka cave, giving the mountain a strong spiritual significance for local Buleleng communities. Three main hiking routes serve the mountain: from Tamblingan Village (following the Mue River upstream), from Gesing Village to the southwest, and via Bukit Pucuk. A standard ascent takes five to six hours. The dry season (April–October) is the preferred climbing window for firmer trails and clearest summit views.
