Description
Gunung Kerenceng (1,736 m a.s.l.) is a dormant remnant peak in Sumedang Regency, West Java, suspected to have a volcanic past and displaying a stratovolcano morphology with a crater-like depression open to the west. The name 'Kerenceng' is Sundanese for ankle bracelet, evoking the tinkling sound said to ring through this area. Its summit forms a tiny equilateral triangle (~3 m sides) at the convergence of three narrow ridges, offering a 360-degree panorama. The mountain lies within Taman Buru Gunung Masigit Kareumbi (12,420 ha, Ministerial Decree No. 298/Kpts-II/1998), spanning Sumedang, Garut, and Bandung regencies. The main trail ascends via Desa Sindulang in Cimanggung district — four trail posts, 4–5 hours to the summit — with the trailhead approximately 12–13 km from Cicalengka train station. An alternative route starts from Kampung Situhiang in Desa Tegal Manggung.
