Description
Gunung Kendeng (about 1,901 m) is an extinct ancient volcano on the border between Cianjur and Bandung regencies in West Java, Indonesia. According to the Indonesian Wikipedia, it was active roughly 1.8 million to 700,000 years ago and left behind an almost perfectly circular caldera more than 2 km in diameter. Several peaks stand on the caldera rim, including Pasir Turen (~1,918 m) as the high point, Kendeng (~1,901 m), Pasir Kendeng (~1,852 m), Batu (~1,816 m) and Malang (~1,795 m). Its last major eruption is said to have ruptured the southwestern side, forming a steep valley some 25 km long now drained by the Citajur River. Hiking information is very limited and there is no formal trail; it is better known as an ancient-volcano geological feature in the southern Bandung Raya area than as a popular climbing destination.
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Gunung Kendeng (~1,901 m) on the Cianjur–Bandung border is uncommon, with few formal trails. Some hikers do it as a single-day up-and-down ('tektok') to reach the rim of this ancient volcano's caldera and enjoy views over the southern Bandung Raya area.
