Description
Gunung Kendang is a 2,608 m stratovolcano on the border of Kertasari Subdistrict (Bandung Regency) and Pasirwangi Subdistrict (Garut Regency), West Java, Indonesia. It is the highest point in the Greater Bandung (Bandung Raya) area, situated about 9 km north of Gunung Papandayan within the same volcanic massif. Its most notable feature is Kawah Manuk — one of four fumarole fields — a broad 2.75 km-wide crater-like depression with active sulfur sublimation, mud pools, and hot springs. On its eastern flank lies the Darajat Geothermal Field, an active commercial geothermal energy source. Although no confirmed Holocene eruptions are on record, the youngest volcanic products — a Kiamis rhyolitic lava dome and obsidian flows — are classified as 'Recent' (late Pleistocene/early Holocene). Gunung Kendang holds Cagar Alam (Strict Nature Reserve) status under BBKSDA West Java and is closed to recreational climbing; access is only permitted for research, education, or conservation with an official permit.
