Description
Mount Kemiri (about 3,314 m; some sources cite 3,315 m) is one of the highest mountains on Sumatra, rising in Gumpang Village, Putri Betung District, Gayo Lues Regency, Aceh Province, inside Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL). Unlike many of Sumatra's other high peaks, Kemiri is not a volcano but a summit of the Leuser range/ecosystem. Its ascent is known to be long and demanding — typically a 4–6 day round trip through dense jungle and steep terrain, starting from Gumpang Village and strongly recommended with a local guide (usually arranged from Blangkejeren). Along the way climbers pass through montane rainforest rich in the protected flora and fauna characteristic of the Leuser ecosystem, reaching savanna grassland around 2,800 m before the summit. Because of its remoteness and the length of the expedition, Kemiri is far less frequented than Sumatra's popular peaks, so trail documentation is limited and careful logistics are central to safety.
