Description
Mount Karang (1,778 m) is a dormant (Type B) stratovolcano in Banten Province, straddling the Pandeglang and Serang regencies. It is the highest mountain in Banten and, by latitude, the northernmost mountain on Java. Its summit is known as Sumur Tujuh ("seven wells"), a reference to small sacred springs/pools, and it has long been a pilgrimage destination — including a tomb associated with Prince TB. Jaya Raksa. Beyond its spiritual role, the massif is hydrologically important as a headwater for several Banten river basins (among them Cibungur, Cidanau, Cibanten and Ciujung). Climbers usually ascend via Kaduengang (west side, ~4–6 h), Pagerbatu/Ciekek (south side, ~7–8 h), or the pilgrimage route from the Ciomas side.

Routes
Via Kaduengang (sisi barat)
Menengah — jalur terpendek dan terpopuler; sebagian pendaki menuntaskannya tektokThe western approach via Kaduengang (Kampung Paku Haji area), generally regarded as the fastest way to the Sumur Tujuh summit. The trail passes forest and gardens before the climb to the sacred springs complex at the top.
SourceVia Pagerbatu / Ciekek (sisi selatan)
Menengah — lebih panjang dan menuntut staminaThe southern approach via Pagerbatu/Ciekek, much longer than Kaduengang and more demanding on stamina. A choice for those wanting scenic variety or starting from the southern Pandeglang side.
SourceVia Pasir Angin
Menengah — trek berbatu dan licin, menantang saat basahThe route from Pasir Angin village, commonly used for day hikes to the crater area and Sumur Tujuh. Hikers note a fairly challenging trail with slippery, mossy volcanic soil.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Mount Karang (1,778 m) in Banten almost always culminates at the Sumur Tujuh summit — a cluster of sacred springs that is both a pilgrimage site and the marker of the high point. The popular Kaduengang/Pasir Angin route can be done as a day hike, while the Pagerbatu route is longer. Hiker accounts highlight slippery, mossy volcanic terrain, fast-descending fog, and a blend of spiritual and adventurous atmosphere: many come to hike and to make pilgrimage at once. Key preparation includes grippy footwear, rain gear, and caution about the changing weather near the summit.
