Kompleks gunung berapi (stratovolcano) aktif; puncak tertinggi Prefektur Iwate (Yakushidake, 2.038 m)
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
39.8525, 141.0011
Difficulty
Sedang–berat. Jalur baku dari Umagaeshi (±630 m) naik ±1.400 m ke puncak dengan lingkar kawah (o-hachi-meguri); pendakian sehari yang panjang (±8–10 jam PP). Rute lingkar Yanagisawa–Umagaeshi mencapai ±21 km.
Best Season
Awal Juli hingga Oktober (bebas salju). Perhatikan: sejak status vulkanik dinaikkan pada Oktober 2024, pendakian dibatasi pada jalur sisi timur.
Permits & Rules

Description

Mount Iwate (岩手山, 2,038 m) is an active stratovolcano complex in the Ōu Mountains of Iwate Prefecture, Tōhoku, and the highest peak in the prefecture. Its gracefully rising cone earns it the nickname 'Nanbu Fuji', and it is listed among Japan's 100 Famous Mountains in Kyūya Fukada's 1964 book. Much of the mountain lies within Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Its summit, Yakushidake, is ringed by a crater around which hikers perform the 'o-hachi-meguri' rim circuit. The most classic route begins at Umagaeshi ('where the horses turn back') at about 630 m and climbs over 1,400 m in a long day hike; the eastern side also features the striking Yakehashiri lava field. Because Iwate is an active volcano, trail access follows the volcanic alert level — since the level was raised in October 2024, climbing has been restricted to eastern-side trailheads. Its panorama takes in the city of Morioka and the Kitakami Mountains.

Routes

Umagaeshi → Fudōtaira → Yakushidake + o-hachi-meguri (jalur klasik)

Sedang–berat
+1400 m ±8–10 jam pulang-pergi

The most classic ascent. From the Umagaeshi trailhead (~630 m) hikers climb over 1,400 m through the numbered stations to the Fudōtaira hut near the top, then up to Yakushidake (2,038 m) and around the crater rim (o-hachi-meguri). A long, demanding day hike with views over the city of Morioka. It is this eastern side that has remained open under the recent volcanic restrictions.

Source

Yakehashiri (ladang lava) → puncak

Berat
±9–11 jam pulang-pergi

An eastern-side route crossing Yakehashiri, the barren, shadeless lava field left by an 18th-century eruption — a striking volcanic landscape. Longer and tougher than the Umagaeshi route, it showcases Iwate's most dramatic geology before joining the summit area. It is one of the eastern trailheads kept open under the volcanic restrictions.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of Iwate stress the scale of the climb: as the highest peak of Iwate Prefecture and one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, the classic Umagaeshi route demands over 1,400 m of ascent in a day, capped by the summit crater circuit (o-hachi-meguri). Vlogs highlight views over the city of Morioka, the Yakehashiri lava field on the east side, and the dramatic crater. Because Iwate is an active volcano, recent accounts also note trail restrictions that follow the volcanic alert level.
