Description

Mount Halcon (2,582 m; some recent measurements cite about 2,616 m) is the highest peak on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines, in Oriental Mindoro (Baco). Though not especially tall, Halcon is widely regarded as one of the HARDEST climbs in the Philippines — the hiking community rates it 9/9: dense tropical jungle, dozens of river crossings, slippery mossy forest, colonies of land leeches (limatik), and a narrow, exposed ridge called the 'Knife Edge' or Azotea near the summit. Climbs typically take 3–4 days round-trip via the Lantuyan or Bayanan trailheads and are only permitted during the official February–May season to protect the ecosystem — Halcon is home to Mindoro-endemic species such as the critically endangered Mindoro bleeding-heart and Mindoro scops owl. The first documented ascent was made by American botanist Elmer D. Merrill in 1906. A permit is required from the Baco Tourism Office, with a medical certificate and proof of experience, plus a local guide.

Routes

Jalur Bayanan — trailhead alternatif

Sangat berat: karakter medan serupa jalur Lantuyan
±3–4 hari pulang-pergi

An alternative trailhead from Barangay Bayanan (around 40 m elevation) also used to reach Halcon's summit, sometimes combined as a different entry or exit from Lantuyan. The terrain is equally demanding: river crossings, dense jungle, and leeches. It likewise requires an official Baco permit and a guide, and is open only during the official climbing season.

Jalur Lantuyan (Baco) — rute klasik pulang-pergi

Sangat berat (9/9): hutan lebat, banyak lintasan sungai, hutan berlumut, dan punggungan Knife Edge yang eksposur
±3–4 hari pulang-pergi

The main and most classic route to Halcon's summit, starting at Barangay Lantuyan in Baco, Oriental Mindoro. The trail cuts through lowland jungle, crosses dozens of streams, climbs slippery leech-ridden mossy forest, then follows the narrow 'Knife Edge' (Azotea) ridge before the summit. It usually takes 3–4 days with jungle camps. A permit from the Baco Tourism Office and a local guide are required; open only in the February–May season.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Halcon (2,582 m), the roof of Mindoro Island, is often called the hardest climb in the Philippines because of its dense jungle, dozens of river crossings, land leeches, and the 'Knife Edge' ridge near the summit. The experiences below — a video vlog and hikers' trip reports — show the reality of Halcon's terrain, the permit-and-guide logistics, and the 3–4 day climb conditions.
