Notable incidents

  • 2025 Hypothermia: the most frequent cause of hiker deaths on West Java mountains

A nine-year record (2016-2025) for West Java mountains logged 10 hiker deaths, with hypothermia the most frequent cause (5 victims); Gede-Pangrango is among the busiest peaks in the region. A structured per-mountain death registry is not available, so the figures are indicative. Lesson: hypothermia prevention is the top safety priority.

  • 2025 Widely-shared hypothermia case on the Gede-Pangrango route (June 2025)

A hiker developed hypothermia near the Air Panas post while descending and died; the case drew wide attention to cold-temperature danger on this very popular mountain near Jakarta. Lesson: do not underestimate the cold nights and mornings on Gede's highlands, pack warm layers and monitor your companions.
